It's been a summer of fun...and beer

USMNT game vs. Guatemala  with an attendance of 44,000+ this soccer game breaks a new TN attendance record.  I was at the last one too which ticked in at 29,000+.  It was a convincing 4-0 win in a friendly game and warm-up for the upcoming Gold Cup.

Had a Hennepin Farmhouse Saison with dinner at Suzy Wong's House of Yum

Had a Dead Horse porter from Calfkiller at The Pour House and then a Celebrator dopplebock from Brauerei Aying in Germany.

Had a Nashweizen white IPA from Tennessee Brew Works here in Nashville at the cool chicken restaurant, Party Fowl

Had a Secret Stache Stout from Finch's Brewing (Chicago) with dinner at The Slider House after getting a book signed by former President Jimmy Carter!

Had a Candy Bar Pinstripe stout from Blue Pants Brewing (Madison AL) with some great gumbo for dinner at TENN16 Restaurant in East Nashville.

Had a Summer Wheat from Good People Brewing (Birmingham, AL) with dinner at Puckett's Grocery before seeing Dolly Parton at The Ryman!

Before  seeing Ant-Man on IMAX (which was great) Ashlee and I ate dinner at The Hop Stop where they were having a Stone Brewing (CA) celebration which happens to be my favorite brewery of them all!!  Here's what I had:

We continued a week later with more Stone Brewing love at The Hop Stop (before Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation in IMAX.  I give it a B-) with the Ruination Double IPA 2.0 and the Delicious IPA

With my sister-in-law, Paige, who is not a beer drinker but does love root beer we found Not Your Father's Root Beer - Small Town Brewing (Wauconda, IL)

Stopped by the new Tailgate Brewing in Nashville with Ashlee and I had their PB and J stout and their chili-infused HOT IPA which was great.  These guys are coming on strong since my last visit!

Had this tasty and hoppy 8-Bit Pale Ale from Tallgrass Brewing (KS) from a Mt. Juliet Brewing variety pack while at an empty-house party for our friends, Chris and Tarryn, who have moved back north.    I followed that with Trooper English Bitter from Robinsons Brewing out of Manchester, England that was OK.  It's can was cooler since it had an Iron Maiden moniker on it.  Next was an Icelandic Pale Ale from the great Icelandic brewery, Einstok Olgerd.  I finished with the 16-bit Double Pale Ale from Tallgrass which was dreamy, hoppy stuff as well.

I had a Sixty-One IPA from Dogfish Head (Delaware) while at lunch at Tony's Pasta in Chattanooga.

At dinner at Pomodoro East in East Nashville I had a # 21 Moe's Backroom Pale Ale out of Winery Exchange (huh?) in California.  The flavor wasn't as long as the lame name.

I took a trip to West TN to see my best friend, Craig, who lives in  Paris and to check out his town's newest craft brewery, Perrylodgic.  While at the tasting room I had their Screaming Eagle IPA and their Poseidon's Steed golden ale.  Both were excellent.  This place has some real potential!  Congrats, Craig, on having such a great craft brewery so close to home!

I headed on over to Tunica after my visit with Craig and got in the Saturday poker tournament at The Horseshoe and made the final table with a 7th place finish!!  I traveled back Sunday via the beautiful Natchez Trace Parkway from Tupelo, MS all the way back to Nashville.  This was my favorite mile-marker since it's my favorite poker hand.

This was my sweet rental ride for my trip to Tunica and back.  Really enjoyed it and couldn't definitely see a convertible version in my future!

I will finish up the this report by logging in that during a fantasy football draft I had a Hipster Repellent IPA from Falls City Brewing in Louisville, KY. It was in a bottle unfortunately and not a "draft".  I am so funny... Loved the beer name and really liked the beer.

from Tommorrowland to Kansas City and Back Again

On our way to see the new IMAX film, Tomorrowland, I stopped at Hop Stop over in East Nashville with Ashlee.  I have been here several times, but this was her first visit.  I had the Wet Hot American Wheat from Finch's (Chicago), then Damascene Apricot Sour Ale from Tin Man Brewing (Evansville, IN) and a sip of Ashlee's Pear Harvest Smokey Treat from Calfkiller Brewing (Sparta, TN)

By the way, the food at The Hop Stop is as outstanding as their beer selections.

Speaking of finally taking someone somewhere, after several trips on her own with work, I finally got to go to Kansas City with Ashlee,  That makes it down to only four states I haven't visited with Kansas now crossed off.  Of course, there's a lot of beer in KC as well!!

Lunch was at a gas station/BBQ joint called Joe's where I had the "burnt-ends"  daily special along with red beans and rice and a Pop-Up IPA from KC's own Boulevard Brewing.  Hey, I wasn't on the clock!

After work, we stopped by Boulevard Brewing for a couple of flights - I had the Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale, the 80-acre Hoppy Wheat, the Tasting Room Red IPA, the Heavy Lifting IPA and sips of Ashlee's Pale Ale and KC Pils(ner).  All were tasty.

Next stop was McCoy's Public House where I had pony half-pints of their Hogpound Brown and Newcom's IPA, plus a sip of Ashlee's Raspberry Wheat and a final pony of their Oatmeal Stout. All were very solid.

The next day we headed east to Columbia, Missouri and had dinner at the Flat Branch Pub and Brewing in Columbia.  The generous flight of six of their own  beers included the Sorachi Ace Pale Ale, the Katy Trail Pale Ale, Ed's IPA, the Green Chili Beer (my fav of the trip),the  Oil Change Oatmeal Stout and their Vanilla Bean Ale.  Food was good too.  Great place and a very cool little college town.

We closed the evening after a great concert by Butch Walker nearby, up on The Roof of the Doubletree Hotel where we were staying and I had the Double Rye IPA from the local Broadway Brewery on a beautiful Missouri full-moon night.

The design was fabulous and made me thirsty, so I cut the sweetness with a Crabbie's Ginger Beer.

Back in Nashville the introducing each other to new stuff continued as I took Ashlee to Butchertown Hall  for dinner and a Sounds baseball game in their new stadium.  I had the Golden Ale from my favorite local brewery, Cool Springs. Then I had the wonderfully-hoppy Soul Style American IPA from Green Flash Brewing (San Diego, CA).



I had a variety six-pack at home from the always-great Mt. Juliet Beer Company. This group included the Bearded Lady witbier from Good People Brewing (Birmingham, AL), the Suzy B blonde ale from Southern Prohibition Brewing (Hattiesburg, MS), the Shiner (TX) Prickly Pear fruit beer, the Rambler pale ale from Green Man Brewery (Asheville, NC), the Introvert IPA from Left Hand Brewing (Longmont, CO) and finally the Melonhead fruit (watermelon) beer from Shipyard Brewing (Portland, ME). I liked it, but Ashlee loved it, and has proclaimed it her "beer of Summer 2015." We bought a case of it to prove it...

We made it back to Bonnaroo this year for a one-day VIP visit, but the only new beer I had there was a  Jibe Session IPA from Green Flash (San Diego). 

That same week we attended a Rolling Stones concert at LP Field/Nissan Stadium in Nashville. We did some tailgating beforehand and I brought along some Truck Stop Honey Brown Ale from Back Forty Beer Company (Gadsden, AL) and the Hop Dang Diggity American IPA from Jekyll Brewing (Alpharetta, GA). Both were excellent, as were Mick and the boys despite their ages.

It's only beer and rock-and-roll, but I like it...

South America!!!....is not known for it's great beer...but....

My wife and I along with some friends traveled to South America for the first time this past May with visits to Ecudaor and the Galapagos Islands.  It was an amazing trip, but the beer was sorely lacking except for one nice surprise in the city of Quito...

Pilsener is the cerveza of choice in Ecuador and it's quality is pretty low I have to say.
I got tired of it pretty quick unlike the weak pilsners of China I encountered a year or so ago.

The other cerveza choice was Club Premium which was worse in my opinion.
The rose I bought for Ashlee from a young kid for a dollar was a much better value.

We found this great little place, Abysmo Brewing, just a few blocks from our hotel.

God's Fluid indeed!  I had their Apolo stout, Zeus lager, Poseidon dunkel,
 Black IPA and Ceres hefeweizen in a sampler flight.  All were pretty good.

There may not have been any good beer in The Galapagos Islands,

 but they are still freaking amazing!

Spring into Summer 2015 Beer Encounters

May 7, 2015 - I met a couple friends, Chris and Danny, tonight at Butchertown Hall restaurant in the Germantown neighborhood near downtown Nashville for dinner and drinks before a Sounds minor-league baseball game in their new park that is nearby.

The tacos were awesome at Butchertown Hall and their beer selection is impressive.  I started with the Ashtray Heart (photo above) smoked beer from Evil Twin Brewing (Brooklyn, NY) which was excellent.  Next was the Weltenburger Asam Bock out of Germany which was impressive also.

The new Nashville Sounds park is beautiful and the beer is cold.
Nothing wrong with a cold PBR on a warm summer night if they are bring them to you at your seat!

May 9, 2015:  I met my friend, Mike, in downtown Chattanooga tonight at the new-to-me World of Beer bar and restaurant.  Their food is good and as their moniker implies...they have a "shload" of different beers to choose from.  I started with the Cannon Clasher Vol. 2 "Spanish Bombs" - an wordy-titled IPA from Burnt Hickory Brewing in Kennesaw, GA.  It was good stuff.  Next up was a Dirty Pecker IPA from my favorite TN brewery, Cool Springs over in Nashville.  Great stuff.  The Devil Dancer Triple IPA from Founders Brewing (MI) was next and it was good as well.  The Glazed Ham Porter from Flat 12 Bierworks (IN) was next.  Not bad.  I finished off the long evening there with a Curmudgeon Old Ale also from Founders.

Ashlee joined us later in the evening and we moved on across the river to check out the new-to-us, Casual Pint bar.  Here I had the Brown Ale from Saw Works Brewing from up the road in Knoxville.  It was decent.

May 14, 2015 - I met my friends, Danny and Brenda, this evening before a showing of the new Mad Max: Fury Road in Nashville at Black Abbey Brewing for a couple of pre-flick libations.

This beautiful lacing is all that was left of The Special, a Belgian brown ale, and the Oaked Fortress dark ale.
I also had a sip of Danny's Chapter House which I was not impressed with but I appreciated his sharing...and his warning.

Awesome movie!!  Why was this not in IMAX??  

If you brew it...they will come...a birthday odyssey northward for baseball, cheese AND BEER!

My 48th birthday has rolled around and I decided I wanted to head north to Wisconsin for the occasion and mark off a few Bucket-List items, a few of which includes beer, of course.  Thanks to my wife, Ashlee, and our friends, Danny and Brenda, for tagging along.

Our first stop in Wisconsin was the regionally famous Baumgartner's Restaurant in Monroe.  The mural above the bar depicted a war between beer and wine is epic and how they get those dollar bills up on the high ceiling is quite an art form.  With our huge cheese plate, I had the delicious Spotted Cow farmhouse ale from nearby New Glarus Brewing (WI) followed by a Madtown Nutbrown ale from Ale Asylum over in Madison (WI).

Our first stop of the night and my first bucket-list check mark was the beautiful Brewery Creek Inn in Mineral Point.  That's right.  You sleep above an actual working brewery!  Thanks to Ashlee for finding the travel article on beer-themed trip featuring this place several years ago.   I have held onto that information for a long time with the attention of checking it out for myself.  The inn was perfect and the town of Mineral Point is beautiful and listed in its entirety on the register of National Historic Places.  At dinner that night I had their London Porter, Kristal Weiss, Pale Ale, Lemon Shandy and their Golden Ale.

The next morning  I crossed another non-beer related bucket list item off as we dipped down into Iowa to visit the movie location of Field of Dreams.  It was a great and well worth the visit.  

We got back into Wisconsin in time for lunch and stopped at the historic Potosi Brewing Company in the tiny town of the same name.  They have lovingly restored this once-large national brewery that is well worth the stop.  They have a great brewpub, an extensive museum and beautiful grounds to wander about on.  With lunch I had a sampler flight that included the Pure Malt Cave Ale, the Hopsmith IPA (probably my favorite beer of the trip), the Fiddler Oatmeal Stout, the Snake Hollow IPA, the Rye IPA, the Tangerine IPA and a couple sips from Ashlee's flight including the Steamboat Shandy and the Czech Style Pilsner.  And the food was great too!!  Fried cheese curds!!!

Our cool places to stay continued tonight as we headed toward LaCrosse and stayed in the small town of Shelby at a restored one-room school house that is now a small two-bedroom inn.  What a great idea!  It was very cool and our friends, Derek and Laurie, who live nearby came over for an evening of pizza and beer.  We provided the pizza and they brought us some great local brews including a Java Lava stout, Me, Myself and IPA and Rubber Mills Pils, all from Pearl Street Brewing in LaCrosse and a Grateful Red IPA from Capital Brewing which is also located in LaCrosse.

in LaCrosse on our way back east toward Milwaukee.  Very cool start to my birthday!

Yes, it was my birthday and we had a couple-hours drive eastward toward Milwaukee for our last night in Wisconsin.  Since I wasn't driving and they sell real beer in gas station up here, I opted for a few "road brews" during our trip including #013 PyscHOPath double IPA from Wisconsin Brewing in Verona and the Scream IIPA (Thumbprint) double IPA from New Glarus Brewing.  High-gravity beers from a gas station?  What an amazing place!!

The list of amazingly, cool places we stayed on this trip continued and even increased as we pulled into The Brewhouse Inn and Suites (a recently-opened luxury hotel in the former Pabst Brewery opened in 1844) in downtown Milwaukee. As a beer-lover, Milwaukee, has always been on my bucket-list to visit, and then when I discovered this place a few months ago, it moved up the list exponentially!!  They, of course, have a great bar in the hotel and we graced it with our presence where I had a sip or two of a PBR (I kinda had too), a Lakefront IPA from here in Milwaukee (which I drank before but had to get that PBR taste out of my mouth!!) and Riverwest Stein lager also from Lakefront.

This is the first hotel I have actually wanted to hang out in.

that was commissioned by Frederick Pabst himself now graces one end of the hotel's mezzanine.

that looked like full beer glasses.  I could so live here!!

Horny Goat Brewing?  Seriously?  And you think I would pass up visiting a place with a name like that?  Well, it was awesome.  Their food rocked (biggest soft pretzel we've ever seen) and their beer was actually really good.  I had the sampler flight shown above (the Slim Billy was a blonde ale, just FYI, the rest are pretty self-explanatory)  plus a few sips from Ashlee's flight including the Archer Apple brown ale and the HornyCopia Pumpkin Ale.

Before we left Milwaukee we had our picture with the Bronze Fonz (of course!) and lunch at a cool place called The Safehouse, a spy-themed restaurant where you even need a password to get into sometimes.  With lunch I had a Fixed Gear red ale from Lakefront Brewing.  We had a great time in Wisconsin and would love to come back and discover more of this great state and the beer they have to offer!

In addendum:

I won a couple of passes to this year's Nashville Film Festival and one of the perks was free beer!  They only had the recently InBev-purchased Goose Island products out of Chicago, but did I mention they were free??  I had the Summer Ale and the 312 Urban Pale Ale.  

4/13/15 - Before my trip up north,  I caught a showing of Furious 7 in IMAX.
  It was over the top as expected, but pretty enjoyable.  Nice tribute to the late Paul Walker at the end.
 Before the show, I stopped by The Hop Stop in East Nashville for dinner (awesome pimento cheese sliders)
 and had a half pint of Boomslang Belgian IPA from Wiseacre Brewing (Memphis) which was pretty good,
 and a 10 oz. pour of the Stone (CA) 18th Anniversary IPA which was excellent.

4/30/15 - After the trip up north, I went and saw Avengers: Age of Ultron in IMAX with Wayne and beforehand had another stop at the Hop...Stop where I had the Aprihop American IPA to celebrate the triumphant return of Dogfish Head (Delaware) back to our distribution area!!  I also had the Dirtwolf double IPA from Victory Brewing (PA).
