I-P-A RIVER

Rob's Beer Blog - This started as a way to record just my craft beer experiences...over the years it has also morphed somewhat into tracking a few of my favorite other things: travel, movies, and tournament poker successes with as much craft beer as possible sprinkled in. Like Thoreau said, "Live deep, and suck out all the marrow of life."

When in doubt....

When in doubt....

From The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Pippin: What's that?
Merry: This, my friend, is a pint.
Pippin: It comes in pints?
[In low voice] Pippin: I'm getting one.

and from The Return of the King-

"you can search far an wide
you can drink the whole town dry
but you'll never find a beer so brown
as the one we drink in our home town
you can drink your fancy ales
you can drink em by the flagon
but the only brew for the brave and true...
comes form the green dragon"

you were warned...

you were warned...

The Perfectly Poured Black & Tan

The old and the wise...

Three elderly gents are taking a walk...

First one says, "Windy, ain't it?"
Second one says, "Naw, it's Thursday."
Third one says, "So am I. Let's get a beer."
"I have respect for beer!"

Glossary o' Terms

ALE: One of the larger families of beers. True ales are brewed with top-fermenting yeast. They are low in carbonation and served warm (not in the U.S. - blogger insert). Best known in England.

BOCK: German-style beer with a strong alcoholic content. (afraid to try one? what are you, chicken? bock! bock! bock! - blogger insert)

LAGER: (boo!! hiss!! - blogger insert) From the German word to store, lagers represent a major family of beers. They have a longer and cooler fermentation period than ales and are brewed with bottom-fermenting yeast (even sounds gross - blogger insert). Most German and North American beers are lagers.

PILSNER: A type of lager beer, first made in Czechoslovakia in the late 13th century. (Czech out that wimp and his pilsner! - blogger insert)

PORTER: A characteristically dark brown beer of English origin. (name origin - so heavy you need a porter to carry it to the table for you?? - blogger insert).

STOUT: A fuller-bodied, richer and sweeter version of porter (created by Ireland's Guiness). (God bless Ireland! - blogger insert)
